IMEX Frankfurt and the Value of Reconnecting: Why In-Person Events Remain Essential in the MICE Industry
Next week, the tourism industry will once again gather at one of the most important events on the international calendar: IMEX Frankfurt. And as every year, thousands of professionals will travel to Frankfurt with agendas full of meetings, quick catch-ups, presentations, and networking events. But beyond numbers, leads, or business opportunities, there is something that still makes the real difference in our industry: human connections.
We live in a hyper-connected era. We use video calls, emails, WhatsApp, Teams, Zoom, and countless other tools that allow us to work with clients, partners, and suppliers from anywhere in the world. And yes, technology has fundamentally changed the way we work. It has made processes more agile, meetings more accessible, and communication almost instantaneous.
However, in an industry as relationship-driven as tourism — and especially within the MICE sector — there is still something that cannot be digitalized: the trust that is built when two people meet in person.
Because we all know that moment: after months — or even years — of communicating by email or phone, you finally meet someone for the first time at a trade fair. And within minutes, the relationship changes. The conversation feels different. There is closeness. Shared context. A genuine connection.
In the world of events, incentives, congresses, and corporate experiences, personal relationships continue to be the true added value.
Trade fairs like IMEX are not just showcases for destinations, hotels, or suppliers. They are places where collaborations begin, strategic partnerships are strengthened, and relationships are built that often last for years. In an environment where experience and personalized service are key, meeting the people behind a project face to face creates a level of trust that is difficult to achieve through a screen alone.
And that is exactly what makes in-person networking so valuable.
It is not only about exchanging business cards or moving from one appointment to the next. It is about spontaneous conversations, having a coffee between meetings, reconnecting over a cocktail, or simply putting a face to someone you have worked with for a long time. Because very often, the best projects are born in those unplanned moments.
The MICE industry has always been, above all, a people business.
That is why in-person events continue to play a fundamental role, even as the world moves increasingly toward hybrid and digital models. Not only for business purposes, but also because of everything they create around them: trust, closeness, empathy, a culture of collaboration, and stronger, longer-lasting relationships.
In an industry dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences, perhaps we should not forget that the most meaningful connections are also created through shared experiences.
And that is probably the real reason why we continue traveling to trade fairs, congresses, and international events year after year.
See you in Frankfurt.
